Television visuals captured the harrowing scene of fire and smoke engulfing the building, as fire tenders took nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control. Despite their efforts, the victims—found unconscious in a lift—could not be saved. They were rushed to another medical facility but were declared dead upon arrival.
Evacuation Efforts and Immediate Response
According to police and fire department officials, all remaining patients were safely evacuated and relocated to nearby hospitals, most of which were government facilities. The swift evacuation helped prevent further casualties, but the tragedy highlights critical gaps in safety measures at healthcare institutions.
Electrical Short Circuits: A Recurring Culprit
Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit might have triggered the fire, a common cause of such incidents in India. This underscores the urgent need for hospitals to adhere to rigorous fire safety norms and conduct regular maintenance checks to minimize risks.
The incident has once again spotlighted the importance of enforcing strict safety protocols in healthcare facilities. As centers of healing, hospitals must be equipped with robust fire prevention systems, including functional sprinklers, emergency exits, and staff trained in fire safety protocols.
