Massive 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Myanmar and Thailand

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Southeast Asia on Friday, with the epicenter located in central Myanmar. The tremors caused extensive destruction across Myanmar and Thailand, killing more than 150 people and injuring hundreds more.

Heavy Losses in Myanmar

Myanmar bore the brunt of the quake. Officials confirmed at least 144 deaths and over 700 injuries. Buildings and infrastructure suffered heavy damage, including the collapse of a 90-year-old bridge and parts of highways. Religious shrines and homes were also destroyed in the capital, Naypyitaw.

Chaos in Bangkok

In Bangkok, Thailand, a 33-storey building under construction crumbled into dust. At least eight people died in the incident, while 90 remain missing. Video footage showed debris falling, water sloshing from high-rise pools, and terrified residents fleeing into the streets. Authorities declared the city a disaster zone to expedite emergency response.

Aftershocks and Wider Impact

The earthquake triggered powerful aftershocks, one measuring 6.4 in magnitude. Tremors were felt as far as India and China. In Tibet, reports indicated nearly 200 injuries. Emergency warnings were issued across affected areas urging people to remain outdoors due to the risk of further aftershocks.

Emergency Response Underway

Rescue operations are continuing amid widespread damage and panic. Governments across the region have called emergency meetings and mobilised resources. In Thailand, the Prime Minister ordered a rapid assessment of all critical infrastructure. In Myanmar, the military government warned the death toll could rise as more areas are reached.
