Dispute Over Academic Pressure
The accused, Utkarsh Dakhole, had been struggling to pass his engineering exams, leading to mounting tension between him and his parents. According to police officials, his parents had advised him to transfer to another college or consider a different career path after repeated academic failures. This suggestion reportedly triggered a violent reaction.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Niketan Kadam stated that Utkarsh strangled his mother first and later stabbed his father. The gruesome act was uncovered after neighbors reported a foul odor emanating from the house.
Following the murders, Utkarsh attempted to cover his tracks by misleading his sister. He sent her to a relative’s home, claiming their parents had gone to attend a meditation program where the use of mobile phones was prohibited. This ruse delayed the discovery of the crime by several days.
Authorities became aware of the situation after neighbors raised concerns about the smell from the house. Police discovered the bodies during a subsequent search.
Investigation
“Utkarsh failed to clear several subjects during his engineering course. His parents, therefore, wanted him to quit engineering and choose something else. However, he was against their suggestion,” an official told PTI.
Utkarsh has been arrested, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and any additional motives behind the crime.
This tragic case highlights the intense pressure many students face in pursuing careers dictated by familial or societal expectations. While the investigation continues, the incident has prompted discussions on the need for mental health support and open communication within families.
