Isa Guha Apologises for ‘Racist Remark’ on Jasprit Bumrah

A significant controversy unfolded during the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane after former England cricketer and commentator Isa Guha referred to Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah as a “primate.” The incident occurred on Day 2, with Guha calling Bumrah “MVP – Most Valuable Primate” while discussing his performance. The remark sparked outrage on social media, with many accusing her of making a racially insensitive comment.

Guha Clarifies and Issues Apology

Acknowledging the backlash, Isa Guha addressed the issue ahead of Day 3’s play on Fox Cricket’s broadcast. She expressed regret for her choice of words, stating, “Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others.”

Guha explained that her intention was to praise Bumrah for his extraordinary abilities, emphasizing that there was no malice behind her statement. “If you listen to the full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players and someone that I admire greatly. I was trying to frame the enormity of his achievement, and I’ve chosen the wrong word. For that, I am deeply sorry,” she said.

She further added, “As someone who is also of South Asian heritage, I hope people would recognize there was no other intention. I am an advocate for equality and inclusion in the game.”

Ravi Shastri Commends Guha’s Apology

Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri weighed in on the incident, commending Guha for her courage to apologise publicly. “Brave woman, to apologise on live television takes some steel. You heard it from the horse’s mouth, so as far as I’m concerned, game’s over,” Shastri remarked. He urged fans to move on, acknowledging that mistakes can happen in the heat of commentary.

The incident has once again highlighted the sensitivity required in sports commentary, particularly in a global and diverse game like cricket. While Guha’s apology has been largely appreciated, it serves as a reminder for commentators to exercise caution with their words, ensuring they uphold the values of inclusivity and respect in the sport.
