Rail-Coach Restaurants to be Set up in Bengaluru

As Bengaluru continues to evolve as a hub of innovation and cultural blending, the South Western Railway has embarked on a distinctive gastronomic venture, set to transform the city’s railway dining experience. As part of the plan, Rail-Coach Restaurants to be Set up in Bengaluru.

Rail-Coach Restaurants – Bengaluru’s New Culinary Destination

Bengaluru’s railway travelers will soon be greeted with a unique dining experience, as two state-of-the-art, air-conditioned rail-coach restaurants are on the horizon for the city’s train stations. Slated for launch by October at KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station and Sir M Visvesvarya Terminal Bengaluru Station (SMVB), these eateries promise an unparalleled blend of ambiance and flavor.

Kusuma Hariprasad, a pivotal figure at the South Western Railway’s Bengaluru Division, revealed the ethos behind this initiative. The objective? To usher in an enriching dining dimension, a departure from the usual fare at railway stations. Envision freshly prepared dishes in a dynamic in-coach setting, a refreshing contrast to the prevailing pre-packaged meals. Furthermore, these establishments aspire to harmonize the culinary divide between station-internal and external offerings, enriching passengers’ gastronomic choices.

Reinventing the Rail Experience

In a move to generate non-ticket revenue, the Railways is innovatively repurposing aging railway coaches slated for decommissioning. The result? Revamped dining spaces that accommodate 50 patrons within and additional seating outdoors. These round-the-clock dining hubs will dish out both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, encapsulating the rich tapestry of north and south Indian cuisines.

June bore witness to a fierce e-auction contest over these restaurants’ contracts. The KSR station’s winning bid went to Oam Industries Pvt Ltd, while Gaurav Enterprises clinched the SMVB station contract. This venture, which extends over five years, is poised to funnel a substantial ₹7.54 Crore in license revenues to the railway coffers.

Following the tracks’ installation by the Railway’s engineering division, licensees will relocate the ready-to-be-utilized coaches. Subsequently, a 60-day refurbishment phase will commence, culminating in the launch of these avant-garde eateries. While the design aesthetics rest with the licensees, the Railways ensures the provision of the coach and requisite land.

Bengaluru’s Yesvantpur and Bengaluru Cantonment stations, post-renovation, may soon join the roster of such rail-coach eateries. And this isn’t the South Western Railway’s maiden venture in this realm; they’ve previously launched the ‘Boogie-Boogie’ at Sri Siddharoodha Swami Railway Station in Hubballi.

The ultimate goal of this venture extends beyond culinary delights. It’s about reimagining spaces, offering unique experiences, and making railway stations more than just transit points. Through initiatives like these, the Railways reaffirms its commitment to enhancing every passenger’s journey, one meal at a time.
