Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway Puts Brakes on 2-Wheelers & Autos

In an effort to reduce the alarming number of accidents, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out restrictions that will change the dynamics of the bustling Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway.

The Sweeping Change

From August 1, the NHAI has decreed that two-wheelers, autos, tractors, non-motorized vehicles, multi-axle hydraulic trailer vehicles, and quadricycles will be barred from the expressway. This move by the authorities has come to light given the significant uptick in the mishaps reported since the road’s inauguration earlier this year.

Post the opening of this expressway in March, the number of accidents reported had seen a spike, igniting concerns over the well-being of its users. Prompted by this, the NHAI swiftly formed a team of road safety experts, assigning them the task of conducting thorough safety audits along the stretch.

The official communique from NHAI on July 12 highlighted the danger high-speed vehicles can pose to slower-moving ones, which include but are not limited to motorcycles, tractors, and autos. Delving into the specifics, the notification reads, “Now, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred under section 35 of The Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, it is hereby ordered that the following classes of vehicles are prohibited from using the Bangalore-Mysuru Access Controlled Highway (NH-275).” The list of vehicles, as per the release, ranges from motorcycles, three-wheelers to non-motorized vehicles.

The NHAI has emphasized that this isn’t the end of the road for those relying on the aforementioned vehicles. Alternate routes exist, ensuring these commuters aren’t stranded or left in a lurch.

The Expressway at a Glance

Launched in March by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway stands as an architectural marvel and a testament to India’s infrastructure development. Spanning 118 Km, the expressway, a project worth ₹ 8,480 crore, has been envisioned to be a high-speed corridor with speed limits hovering around 80km/hour. Beyond the realm of transport, this expressway is seen as a monumental leap towards socio-economic progress in the encompassed regions.

As the expressway prepares for this new transition, the underlying emphasis remains on ensuring the safety of all its users. The road ahead, while limited for some, is geared towards a safer journey for all.
